Dating Site Security Breaches
The reported scandal of Ashley Madison stolen records is the latest in a trend that has affected multiple dating, or hook-up, sites and millions of their customers. Current users have reportedly been victimized by hackers in many of these security breaches, but the alleged problem with the Ashley Madison or “AM” security breach has affected former users in particular. The AM scrub data service that was offered by the website, which purportedly offered a full deletion of customers’ personal information for a fee, was the reason given by the hackers for attacking AM. If you or anyone you know has been a member of Ashley Madison.com, then you may be part of a class action lawsuit. An investigation into this matter is ongoing. AM Hack
The AM hack is different than past hook-up site hacks because the Ashley Madison name list and other user information is being threatened with exposure by the hackers. Hook-up site data breaches in the past have been reportedly used for credit card data theft and identity theft purposes generally. But the AM data breach has been alleged to be a new chapter in the history of dating site security breaches. The AM data theft has caused potential problems for the website in two ways. It has been reported that in response to the accusations made by the hackers that the AM delete profile service did not work, the website offered to scrub data for current and former customers for free. This offer was made after the AM scrub data feature reportedly earned the website millions of dollars from users who paid but did not actually have their profiles removed. This is currently under investigation but will most likely give former customers a reason to contact an AM attorney for a potential Ashley Madison lawsuit. If you or anyone else has been victimized in this way, you may be part of a class action lawsuit.
